FPC Stiffener Material Selection Guide: PI, FR4 & Steel

FPC (flexible printed circuit board) stiffener materials are used to enhance the mechanical strength and stability of an FPC, especially around connectors or other areas that require support. Choosing the right stiffener material is critical to ensuring the performance and reliability of the final product. Here are some common FPC stiffener materials and their characteristics.

FPC stiffener materials

1. PI Stiffener (Polyimide)

High-temperature resistance: PI has excellent heat resistance and is suitable for high-temperature soldering environments.

Good flexibility: It is compatible with the FPC substrate, which is usually also PI, and can maintain a certain degree of flexibility.

Chemical resistance: PI resists chemicals and environmental corrosion, making it suitable for harsh environments.

Applications: Usually used in electronic equipment requiring high-temperature soldering or high reliability, such as automotive electronics, aerospace, and industrial control equipment.

2. FR-4 Stiffener (Fiberglass Epoxy)

High mechanical strength: FR-4 has excellent mechanical strength and rigidity, providing strong support.

High rigidity: Compared with flexible materials, FR-4 is harder and suitable for areas requiring mechanical support.

Heat resistance: FR-4 has a certain level of heat resistance and is often used in high-temperature soldering processes.

Applications: Commonly used in areas requiring additional mechanical support, such as FPC connector areas or devices requiring higher rigidity.

3. Stainless Steel Stiffener

Extremely high mechanical strength: Stainless steel has very high mechanical strength and can provide excellent support for FPCs.

High-temperature and corrosion resistance: Stainless steel withstands high temperatures and resists corrosion and oxidation, making it suitable for harsh environments.

Strong rigidity: Due to its hardness, stainless steel stiffeners are mainly used in areas that require very rigid support.

Applications: Mostly used where high mechanical loads or high wear resistance are required, such as key components in heavy industrial equipment and medical devices.

4. 3M Tape

Convenient fixation: 3M tape provides excellent initial adhesion and long-term holding power, making it easy to install and secure.

Excellent flexibility: Unlike rigid stiffeners, 3M tape does not add rigidity, allowing the FPC to retain its original mechanical flexibility.

Various type options: Depending on your needs, you can choose high-temperature resistant types (like 3M 9077) or types with relatively lower temperature resistance (like 3M 468).

Applications: Usually used to bond and secure FPCs to enclosures or component housings after assembly, rather than providing mechanical rigidity support.

Main Factors for Selecting a Stiffener Material

1. Mechanical strength: If certain areas of the FPC require higher mechanical strength or must withstand larger external forces, FR-4 or stainless steel can be selected as the stiffener material.

2. Temperature resistance: For FPCs that require high-temperature soldering or operation in high-temperature environments, PI or FR-4 is usually preferred.

3. Flexibility requirements: If the stiffener must retain a certain degree of flexibility, flexible materials such as PI are better choices, while rigid materials such as FR-4 or metal are not suitable.

4. Environmental adaptability: For harsh working environments such as high temperature, high humidity, or chemical corrosion, high-temperature and corrosion-resistant materials such as PI and stainless steel should be selected.

  • High-temperature and high-reliability applications: choose high-strength, heat-resistant materials such as PI, FR-4, or stainless steel.
  • High flexibility and lightweight requirements: choose flexible materials such as PI.
  • High-strength support required: choose FR-4 or stainless steel.
