High Frequency PCB, What Is It?

High frequency PCBs, also known as HF PCBs, are special circuit boards with high electromagnetic frequencies that provide faster signal flow rates and up to 100 GHz frequency ranges, typically applicate to high-speed designs, high reliability and complex design, radio frequency (RF), microwave, wireless communication devices, and telecommunications. Generally, high frequency PCB has a lower dielectric constant and lower dissipation factor. It is a good choice for highly complex electronic devices.

How to Choose a High-quality High Frequency PCB

1.Choose the base material with appropriate Dk/Df. PCBs with lower Dk have faster phase velocities than boards with higher Dk. For circuits that are sensitive to delay accuracy, such as high-speed digital circuits, which may be affected by transmission lines with different phase speeds or transmission delays, in this situation, more attention should be paid to the Dk value of the PCB base material.

Also, a PCB base material with a higher Dk produces a smaller wavelength at a certain frequency, which results in a smaller circuit size on PCB.

2.The coefficient of thermal expansion of the substrate is preferably consistent with that of the copper foil. The inconsistency might cause the copper foil to separate when the temperature changes greatly.

3.Try to choose PCBs with better heat resistance, chemical resistance, and deformation resistance.

Advantages of Rogers PCB

Rogers-RO4350B: This material is a strengthened glass hydrocarbon/ceramic material with a dielectric constant of 3.48 at 10GHz, which makes it commonly used in high-frequency power amplifier designs. The RO4350B laminate has a low Z-axis coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE), which ensures high stability of multilayer circuits interconnected by plated through holes (PTH). (The thickness of the finished product is 0.6/0.9/1.65mm in three specifications).

Features of Rogers PCB:

  • Glass-reinforced Hydrocarbon and ceramic dielectric
  • Volume manufacturing process
  • Excellent high-frequency performance
  • Low Z-Axis expansion, excellent dimensional stability
  • Integrated thin film resistor benefit
  • CAF resistant

Typical Applications:

  • Global communication system
  • High reliability and complex multi-layer circuits
  • Wireless communication devices

Advantages of PTFE Teflon PCB

PTFE Teflon PCB has outstanding comprehensive performance in practical use and is an ideal material choice for high-complexity and high-reliability designs. It has good temperature resistance, strong heat dissipation, excellent dielectric properties, and good mechanical stability. Very durable in use and can withstand a certain amount of oxidation and UV rays, so it is also a cost-effective option.
